To prevent economic and legal damages arising from the use of illegal software by members of the University, we hereby provide information on cases of illegal software use and guidance on the use of genuine software as follows, and ask for your cooperation.
1. Major Software Subject as illegal use
a) Design and simulation programs (Abaqus, Ansys, Autodesk, etc.)
b) Adobe software (Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro, etc.)
c) Microsoft operating systems and Office
d) Typefaces (fonts)
e) Cases that violate software usage terms and conditions (EULA), etc.
2. Examples of Issues Raised Regarding Illegal Use
a) Use of illegal software or software without a valid license installed on personal devices
(such as laptops)
while connected to the University network (IP) either on or off campus via VPN
* Actual cases have occurred in which copyright holders formally notified the University of
suspected infringement based on access information and other relevant data collected
in the course of software use.
b) Cases involving printing in publications, promotional materials, academic conference
presentation materials, etc., or posting on the web without purchasing the relevant
copyright
c) Cases that violate the terms and conditions of free or paid software use (EULA)
(e.g.: installing the paid extension pack for Oracle VirtualBox)
d) Creation of secondary works, such as promotional materials, papers, and reports,
using illegal software, etc.
3. Liability for Software Copyright Infringement
The University prohibits any unauthorized installation or use of illegal software by its members, whether on or off campus.
The use of illegal software constitutes an unlawful act by the individual user, and as a
general rule, the legal liability arising therefrom shall be borne by the person concerned.
a) Criminal Liability
- Copyright infringement, including unauthorized reproduction and use:
imprisonment for up to five years or a fine of up to 50,000,000 KRW , or both
- Depending on the severity and form of the copyright law violation,
including whether it was committed for profit-making purposes, the act may be
subject to criminal punishment.
b) Civil Liability
- Liability for damages to the copyright holder
- Users may be required to retroactively purchase genuine licenses and pay substantial
settlement amounts.
4. Guidance on the Use of Genuine Software and Cooperation Requests
a) Adobe Acrobat:
Reader (viewer) is free of charge, but Pro version which includes editing functions
must be purchased individually.
Users may use PDF editing functions through the “ALPDF” program provided by the
University.
(For file conversion and annotation functions, users may use the “HanPDF” program,
which is installed together with Hangul 2018 or later)
b) Please comply with the terms and conditions of use for common software provided
by the Digital Information Office.
The list of available software can be found on the Portal under:
[Administration] > [IT Resource Request] > [Software Access Request].
Any other necessary commercial software must be used only after purchasing an
official license.
c) If you directly receive an official letter or email from a copyright holder or law firm
regarding illegal use including a request for guidance or settlement, please do not
respond or agree to any settlement at your own discretion,
